Flying After Diving Guidelines

Current Recommendations of Diver’s Alert Network
Stingray City

These guidelines are based on the current research and recommendations of the Diver’s Alert Network- the leaders in dive medicine and PADI International.

  • For single tank dives within the no decompression limits, a minimum pre-flight surface interval of 12 hours is suggested.
  • For repetitive dives and/or multi-day dives within the no decompression limits, a minimum pre-flight surface interval of 18 hours is suggested.
  • For dives requiring decompression stops, a minimum pre-flight surface interval greater than 18 hours is suggested.

We respect the individual wishes of our divers if they want to add more surface interval time to the minimum recommendations.

Dive Example

Here are some real realistic dive planning examples to help you schedule your dives:

On a Friday morning two tank dive you would be out of the water by 11AM. If you were flying on Saturday morning at 7:30 you would have 21 hours out of the water before ascending to attitude on your way home.

If you were diving the afternoon two tank dive and had a 10:00am flight time the following day, you would be finished and out of the water by 16:00. Giving you 18 hours prior to flight.

Is there a wait time after you land on island before you can dive? This is a question we get asked and the answer is NO. You can land, clear customs and then head straight to the dive boat and dive. If you are intending to dive after your flight please pay extra attention to hydration and rest.
